Breaking the Stigma: Muzzle Training Day with The Muzzle Movement

At Rain Rescue, we’re always striving to learn more and do better for the animals in our care. Last week, we were incredibly lucky to welcome The Muzzle Movement for a specialist training day focused on – you guessed it – muzzles!

Who are The Muzzle Movement?

The Muzzle Movement is a fantastic organisation working to challenge the stigma around dogs wearing muzzles. Their aim is to promote muzzle awareness, safety, and training through education, support, and positive reinforcement. They believe – as do we – that muzzles are a powerful tool for dog welfare, not a mark of a “bad dog.”

And they’re not just about education – they also design and create their own range of muzzles that are unlike anything you typically see on the market.

Muzzles Made with Care – and Style

The Muzzle Movement’s muzzles are specially designed to be safe, comfortable, and eye-catching. Forget the outdated image of bulky, intimidating muzzles – theirs are bright, colourful, and thoughtfully crafted, helping to remove the fear and stigma often associated with muzzle-wearing dogs.

They come in a wide range of sizes and styles to fit all kinds of breeds, from petite pups to larger dogs, ensuring that every dog has access to a properly fitting, breathable, and secure muzzle. They’ve created a product that not only works beautifully but also helps start positive conversations with the public about why muzzles are important.

Training Day at Rain Rescue

The training session was open to both staff and volunteers, and it proved to be incredibly informative and valuable for everyone involved. We learned how to properly introduce muzzles to dogs using positive, reward-based training – helping our rescue dogs feel confident, safe, and comfortable when wearing one. One of the most important takeaways from the session was how crucial it is to break the stigma surrounding muzzle use. Dogs wearing muzzles are not dangerous or aggressive by default – and it’s vital the public understands this.

Why Might a Dog Wear a Muzzle?

There are many completely valid and responsible reasons why a dog might wear a muzzle, including:

  • Vet visits or grooming: Some dogs find these experiences stressful or overwhelming, and a muzzle helps keep everyone safe.

  • Recovering from surgery or injury: A muzzle can prevent a dog from licking or chewing at wounds or bandages.

  • Exploring new environments: In unfamiliar situations, a muzzle can help owners feel more in control and relaxed, which in turn helps the dog.

  • Scavenging prevention: Some dogs have a habit of eating things they shouldn’t on walks – a muzzle can prevent this and keep them safe.

  • History and background: Some dogs come to us with unknown or difficult pasts. For example, ex-racing greyhounds may have retained a strong prey drive from their previous lives.
  • Breed-specific legislation: Sadly, in some places, dogs of certain breeds are legally required to wear muzzles in public, regardless of their behaviour.

In short, muzzles don’t mean a dog is dangerous – they mean an owner is being proactive, responsible, and caring.

Putting Training into Practice

At Rain Rescue, all of our training and handling is based on positive reinforcement. This means we focus on rewarding the behaviours we want to encourage, using patience, encouragement, and kindness every step of the way. We believe training should always be fear-free, force-free, and grounded in respect for each individual dog – their background, personality, and pace.

That’s exactly why this session with The Muzzle Movement was such a great fit for us.

Alongside the theory, we had the opportunity to work with a few of our own rescue dogs and put these positive principles into practice. The trainers demonstrated a calm, step-by-step approach to introducing a muzzle in a way that builds trust and confidence. It was a powerful reminder that with the right techniques – and plenty of patience and consistency – even the most nervous dogs can learn to feel safe and comfortable wearing a muzzle.

What Our Team Had to Say

Steph, one of our dedicated volunteers who attended the training, shared her thoughts:

“I thought the training section was excellent. The two trainers were very knowledgeable and clearly passionate about the welfare of dogs.  I thought I knew a thing or two about muzzles on dogs, but after attending the course I now realise that I didn’t, and I have gained a lot from it.”

A Huge Thank You

We’d like to say a huge thank you to The Muzzle Movement – not only for delivering such an insightful, empowering training session, but also for donating some of their amazing muzzles for us to use with our rescue dogs. These will make a real difference in helping our dogs feel safe and supported as they continue their journeys toward loving new homes.
