Phoebe is just 3 years and 11 months old, but right now even something as simple as breathing is a struggle for her.

She came into Rain Rescue last week due to a change in family circumstances. Her previous owner made the heartbreaking but responsible decision to reach out for help when they knew they could no longer give Phoebe everything she needs. There’s absolutely no judgment here — asking for help was the right thing to do.

But when Phoebe arrived, we quickly realised something was very wrong.

Phoebe struggles to breathe.

When she gets excited, her breathing becomes heavy and laboured. Sometimes it becomes too much for her little body and she simply flops onto the cold floor, exhausted, trying desperately to catch her breath.

Our vets have confirmed that Phoebe has severe Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) — a condition sadly common in flat-faced breeds like Bulldogs. Because of the way these dogs have been bred, their airways are restricted, making breathing incredibly difficult.

Imagine trying to live your life breathing through a straw. That’s what everyday life feels like for Phoebe.

Breathing isn’t the only thing she’s battling. Phoebe arrived with painful ear infections, inflamed skin and severe allergies that leave her constantly itchy and uncomfortable. She is currently on steroids to help calm her skin, and our team must clean the folds on her face twice a day to prevent infections.

But the most urgent problem is her breathing.

Phoebe needs BOAS surgery to widen her airways so she can finally breathe properly and live the life every dog deserves.

The surgery alone will cost £1,019 through Animal Trust. She will also need ongoing medication and regular vet checks while we treat her skin and ear problems.

For a small rescue like Rain Rescue, costs like this add up incredibly quickly — especially while we continue caring for many other dogs and cats who also rely on us every single day.

But we refuse to give up on Phoebe.

This surgery could completely transform her life, allowing her to move, sleep and play without the constant struggle for air.

Right now Phoebe is safe with us. But she needs your help.

Even £1 can make a difference towards Phoebe’s surgery and treatment. When our community comes together, those small donations can truly change an animal’s life.
