Can Cats and Dogs Really Live Together?

One of the questions we often get asked at Rain Rescue is whether cats and dogs can live together. The short answer is… yes! But it all depends on their individual personalities and needs. Every animal is unique, and as a rescue, our top priority is always to make sure each cat or dog is placed in a home where they’ll be happy, safe, and confident.

Take Bumble, for example. This confident boy cat was adopted this May into a very busy household. His new home isn’t your average setup – it includes a cockatiel, 12–13 chickens, a tortoise, a senior cat, three Belgian Malinois, a Caucasian Shepherd, and three South African Boerboels!

We knew Bumble’s confident and adventurous personality meant he could thrive in such an active home – a nervous or shy cat might not have settled in the same way. And thrive he has! Bumble has become best friends with the biggest dog in the house, and his owners absolutely adore him. They keep in touch with us regularly, sending updates on everything he’s getting up to. We’re so happy for you, Bumble!

At Rain Rescue, every adoption is carefully considered. We assess not just the animal, but also the household, other pets, and the lifestyle of the adopters to make sure it’s the right match. This is how we ensure cats and dogs – or any combination of pets – can live together harmoniously.

So yes – sometimes cats and dogs (and even other animals!) can live together beautifully… but only when their personalities and needs align.
