This week, two Bedlington Terriers came into our care: Ruby and Woody — a bonded pair whose love and devotion to each other are immediately clear. Ruby relies heavily on Woody, who gently boosts her confidence when she’s shy. Watching them together, you can see the bond they share: a comforting companionship that has carried them through uncertain times.

Their journey to us wasn’t their fault. Their owners, who had become unwell, were moving house, and their new accommodation didn’t allow pets. Suddenly, Ruby and Woody found themselves without a home. It wasn’t until they arrived at our centre that we discovered the true extent of their needs.
Like all animals in our care, they were taken to our vets immediately. Woody, nine years old, had long nails, matted fur, and a chronic ear problem that causes him ongoing discomfort. His ears are inflamed and painful, but he has now been given steroid ear drops to help manage the swelling and irritation. Every day, he is likely experiencing discomfort that affects his mood, energy and overall well-being — something no dog should have to endure. He also needs a dental procedure to address further health concerns.
Ruby, 13, is even more vulnerable. Alongside her long nails and matted fur, she has multiple mammary gland tumours. The surgeries required to remove them are extensive and, at her age, carry a significant risk. She relies on Woody’s presence for comfort and reassurance, leaning on him through every moment. Thankfully, our vets believe she is not currently in pain and her blood results are normal for her age, but the reality is that Ruby is a fragile, senior dog.
Despite their medical challenges, our dedicated vet team and animal carers have already begun their rehabilitation journey. They’ve given the pair much-needed baths and grooming, and their long nails have been carefully trimmed. These small steps are the start of helping them feel safe, cared for and loved again.
Caring for Ruby and Woody — alongside the many other animals in our rescue — is expensive. The treatments, ongoing medical care and daily attention these dogs need add up quickly. Every day, we see more animals arrive in desperate situations, needing our help. Times are tough, but our mission remains: to give every animal the care, comfort and love they deserve.
We know times are tough for everyone. If you are able to, please, please donate. Every gift — no matter the size — helps us be there for animals like Woody and Ruby for as long as they need us. Your gift goes straight to providing the care, treatment and love they need each day.
