As we have gone through a hard 6 months, we look back at the numbers.
Rain Rescue have taken into their 140 cats and 40 dogs – all that were in need of a lifeline to prevent them being homeless, or that were already homeless.
Charlie celebrates tonight with a game of football – being safe in our care tonight, waiting for that fun home to come along and find her.
Just because a dog or cat has ended up in a rescue centre, doesn’t mean they have problems, nor does it mean they have failed. It just means that it wasn’t right for them first time around. Rain Rescue is here – to help them find their new great home – 2nd time around.
We are always looking for great homes – and we have done this year – with 154 adoptions. (Some will have been reclaimed, some transferred, some died and some still in care looking for new homes).
The future of helping our canine friends in animal welfare lies in our conversations with them. How we listen to what they are saying. How we explain to them what we would really like them to do.
Thank you to Gemma from Positive Paws Training for putting together a great learning session today for our kennel team here at Rain Rescue. As we strive to understand the language of dog
Here’s to many more sessions to come.

Vickie and Jason (KitchenEX). !!! Still out there on their last leg. Vicky started to support Rain Rescue many years ago when she heard about us from a friend. She and her local company KitchenEx have been supporting us ever since, with a lovely smile every time. This time, she’s not only given cash, but she’s walking 90 miles and …..
You’ve still got time to support them on their Hadrian’s Wall Challenge.

Vicky says “ It has been such an experience. Spending time pushing myself, appreciating the beauty of our beautiful country and meeting some wonderful people along the way has been such a fantastic contrast to the difficult last year.
The generosity of family , friends, colleagues, business contacts and complete strangers has been overwhelming . We are well on the way to our target for our fundraising for Rain Rescue, if you would like to support this great animal charity, here is the link.
Thank you so much to all our supporters”
Today has been a hard day – in the last 2 days, we have taken in 4 cats and 2 dogs as well as rehoming 1 cat and 2 kittens & 3 vet trips. We now have 50 dogs and cats being paid for and cared by Rain tonight. So I had to share this with you. Eli is one we could say YES to, and that we could help Eli is the reason why I work in rescue. Through so many ups and downs and horrible days, knowing that we could say YES to helping him, makes it bare-able.Eli has lived with his dad for the last 9 years. Sadly, dad could no longer care for Eli, and if we couldn’t take him, he had nowhere to go but a one way trip to the vets. When we heard it was an 11 year old GSD I was dubious? They are normally on their last legs at 8 or 9 but 11?
Then Eli bounced out of the car. Yes, he’s stressed and missed his dad but when the vet checked him over, he did have lumps but they were just cysts – and other than that – he loves the field, he loves his tea and he loves us. Tonight Eli is safe, he’s warm, he has a thick bed, and he’s fed. Tomorrow he will start to look for his new home whilst he gets flea’d and wormed and groomed.Tomorrow is a new day for Eli and for me – because tomorrow, I know I can face another day.Thank you all for supporting our wonderful charity as we say “YES” to Eli. Come on in!!! Your £2.00 helps us keep on saying “YES”.

CATS CATS CATS …
Kitten season is truly upon us here at Rain, we are currently caring for 6 mum cats and their litters as well as poor 10 month old stray who has just arrived who we also suspect is pregnant! Truly horrendous and just the start of it no doubt.
Fruit Gum pictured below is one of four hand rear kittens with foster mum Pam who has done an amazing job after the kittens weren’t being fed by their scared mum cat and are now slowly moving onto proper meals.
Yesterday saw Kes the cat with the poorly eyes featured in our last newsletter go off to his forever home. Fosterer Olwynne had a space so in came Tiddles, pictured above. She’s a bit blind and in need of a hernia op. Poor girl, but she’s the reason Rain is here and must continue to be here.
Caring for these cats, doesn’t come easy or cheap. All cats and kittens here at Rain are health checked, fully vaccinated and neutered as part of their adoption packages and with 30 homeless cats in our care right now your help is needed more than ever. We rely on the kind donations of our supporters to keep saving lives of stray and abandoned cats. Make a donation today.
Thank you!
Can you donate an Easter gift to our animals? The impact of COVID has been devastating for so many charities. We owe everything to our incredible supporters and we wouldn’t be here without them, but sadly we are not out of the woods just yet. We’re still living hand to mouth. Still saving lives. Still giving more love and care to dogs and cats who would die without us. But still not knowing where our next penny is coming from. Since January 1st we have taken in an additional 64 cats and 22 dogs. Our wonderful Fosterers have cared for many animals, and 55 cats and 18 dogs have been adopted. We have come so far! Please, please don’t let us fall at this final hurdle. This Easter, please give an Easter Gift no matter how large or small to those animals who still need our help. You can either donate using the button above or dedicate your donation to a family member or a beloved Pet by purchasing a Paw Print. Your help is so desperately needed by these animals who will suffer even longer and die without us at Rain. The suffering to which they have been subjected is not their fault – please give as much as you can so that we can keep on alleviating their pain and bewilderment. Thank you so much for any support you can give us – it truly means the world.

Even though the troubles of COVID that we are all experiencing very different times, Rain Rescue have been helping dogs and cats. Things are very different, and the site is so quiet without the busy buzz of people coming, and restrictions on our lovely volunteers – but the team that is in are managing to keep finding new homes for them once they are ready.
Thank you for being a part of Rain so we can keep on helping them.
This March, we want to encourage you to get out into the great outdoors, whether that be alone or with your four-legged friend, and take on the Ramble, Run or Ride 4 Rain Rescue Challenge. You can pick from 3 challenge options and help to support Rain Rescue and our ongoing mission to rescue the lives of cats and dogs at risk in and around Yorkshire.
Your challenge options are:
RAMBLE 4 RAIN – walk 10,000 steps a day in March
Ways to fundraise:
- Share your GivePenny page with friends and family and ask them to support you no matter how big or small – every penny counts!
- Ask your supporters to sponser you per day/per mile (e.g. £1 per mile). This will give you the encouragement and motivation to keep going and complete the challenge!
- Encourage supporters to pledge to donate once you have completed the challenge – another motivation to get you through to the end.
Thank You and Good Luck!
Do you ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes here?
I thought I’d give you just a little insight into what goes into helping the thousands of pets that come into our care.
In 2020 we helped 404. Each averaging 30 days of care either at the centre or in a foster home. Thats 12,120 days and nights of care. From our small but active team.
Already in 2021 we have given 493 days of care to 33 dogs and cats:-
Let me share with you just a little of what the team do:–
We listen to the story or reason why people need help and work out the best solution
Collect the dog or cat from their current situation
Make up a nice bed thats suitable and safe for them
Work out and twice daily give, the right type and amount of food that they need
Give the dogs a new nice fitting collar and id tag and register both dogs and cats for their microchip to Rain Rescue
Give them an initial health check prior to the vets, and take to the vets any poorly or urgent cases
Take them to the vets for their proper health check and start their vaccinations as necessary
Provide daily medication and nursing as advised by the vet
Clean their cat pen out during the day and making sure they have just the right amount and type of toys and cuddles that they need
Take the dogs out for daily walks, toilet breaks, companionship, games and stimulation
Clean their kennels and giving fresh water and make their blankets and bed just right for them every day
Behaviourally assess both dogs and cats to see who the sort of new home they will need
Book into the vets and take for surgery or neutering and provide after care as needed
Chat over with foster homes, if thats the right move for this pet
Deliver them to fosterers along with all the food and litter as needed
Read all the applications that come through trying to find just the right match for this dog or cat
Talk to the new owners, advising and assessing both the cat or dogs needs to ensure they match up with the new family’s needs
Deliver to their new home (Due to the restrictions of Covid, we can’t invite families to site) so try super hard to get the match right. Always being there for the pet if it doesn’t work out
Update all the information to the new owner to make sure microchip and vet details are correct.
Follow up with a call and catch up to make sure all is ok
Repeat … x 1,000’s
Meet 2 of our kennel team, Zoe and Steph and 2 of our cattery team Janice and Jackie.
4 of the teams that carry all of this out (and more) throughout all of the Covid – and they keep on smiling.
So – please bare with them – its often a busy day

This year has been a year like no other, in every respect. We’ve faced challenges like never before, caring for more poorly animals than we can ever remember, in the midst of a global pandemic, with furloughed staff, redundancies and the cancellation of most of our planned fundraising events for the year.
Despite all this we’ve carried on, and worked tirelessly for those who need us the most.
404 animals (an increase of 11% from 2019) have passed through our gates this year on the way to a better future, thanks to your support.
Just as importantly, we’ve been there for the owners and their families when they had nowhere else to turn; facing homelessness, hospitalisation, financial hardship and sometimes, tragically, the death of a loved one. We also remember the animals who arrived too late, and were shown kindness in their final days before passing over Rainbow Bridge.
Who knows what 2021 will bring, but, because of people like you, donating and supporting our work, we can continue to be there for those who need us this coming year.
We know how much you love to visit us around Christmas to drop off gifts of toys, treats and blankets for the cats and dogs in our care, but unfortunately we are unable to receive gifts this way, this year.
We are really sorry but due to the situation with Covid-19, and the Tier 3 restrictions, we are unable to receive non-urgent visits to the site. We have been really strict in making sure that we are doing everything we can to keep our small team Covid safe and healthy, and to ensure that our animals have the best care.
So this year, please let us do the shopping for you! You can donate to one of our Christmas stockings by heading over to our ‘Give the Gift of Christmas’ page. We’ll send you your own personal thank you and we’ll make sure your gift is delivered to our cats and dogs this Christmas.
Thank you!
